I think this went through a few changes - or mistakes! - because I kept starting out with the background first and then remembering I wanted to base everything around the words where possible. Also, I'd been listening a bit to Roger McGough and wanted to get a bit of poetry into it. I've always had a better relationship with animals, by and large, than people, so that became the basis of the words. I was then stuck for how to include animal sounds. At first, I downloaded some samples, but that felt too easy and at odds with what I'd done elsewhere - so I tried to imitate the sound of dog barks, purring, etc using a mixture of the voice and recording knives scraping against things etc - in the style of sound designers and improvisors like the Bohman Brothers. This was part of my general idea in the creation of the tracks: not to use standard musical notes I didn't necessarily understand the function of. As it turned out a bit spartan, I added in A & D on the acoustic guitar just as a kind of counterpoint to that; like a soundtrack to the soundtrack!
